I heard a story for years about an ancestor who died young from a parrot bite. When I discovered Find-A-Grave and traced my father's relatives, there was an uncle of my great aunt whose record contained a newspaper obituary. John was bitten by his pet parrot and the infection took him out in days. He was only 39. But I also learned he was a much liked train engineer of the local narrow gauge railroad.

I restarted my tree last year and haven't added any unsourced ancestors, which made me realize most of the Family Search lines are unverifiable at some point and I had just taken them for granted as they made sense.

Enjoyed this video, but not all ancestral dirty laundry needs to be aired. We can never know the whole story, and those that went before us are not here to defend themselves. Charity and discretion should always come before our desire to share everything we learn.

I found this *very* helpful! I have been trying to find out where a particular ancestor lived and died, and even though I can't find her death record (she died in 1836 or 1837 in rural Tennessee) I found out where the family lived then by looking at her children's obituaries. I might even be able to get their certificates since they died so much later, and in a more populated area. Thanks!

It's amazing how many people have ancestors who came over on the Mayflower. The false information is frustrating and really time consuming. I found an ancestor who was 7 and died in Plymouth and she was the mother of a another person and she was 7! Fun travelling through this stuff, but glad I'm retired. Thanks.

I think it is a big waste of time to try and trace a family link with someone who is a 4th or 5th cousin. You are talking about dozens of grandparents they have which have nothing to do with you. This basically just makes us all strangers; related but NOT REALLY. Give it UP!!!

Thank you so much! I have been researching people in my tree for decades, but when I get back into the middle 1700s. Even death records in Tennessee as early as 1837, there is very little. There are other ideas: bad transcription of the record (the paleographer couldn't read the name properly); a lot of places have online records not indexed yet (specially outside US). You should be careful about that and try to go directly to the images and look for the record one by one.

All it takes is one person to claim that the husband of so and so had two different sir names and was the same person without any proof whatsoever. They just want it to be that way so they can claim they are related to the Lord mayor of London in 1600s!! It drives me insane because it screws up everybody’s research! Researching this far back takes great care and patience because a. Record keeping wasn’t that great, b. Nearly Every first born son had the same names as the father so unless they were wealthy, really tricky to sort out.

Dear Amy, Thank you for your post. I was getting all excited about the new Ancestry "Pro Tools", but then your clarification at the end of your post, while depressing, was MOST appreciated. (Honesty and integrity in this day and age are sadly lacking.) I am in my 8th decade. Adding a monthly charge to my "World Explorer" account would not be frugal. Yes, it would be wonderful to have these tools, but I must respectfully decline. I WOULD consider paying for one (1) month, but must be able to cancel at the end of it. Is that possible?

I had a problem with a woman volunteer on Family Search web page: She took my tree and attached a lot of persons WITHOUT SUPPORT DOCUMENTS. I warned her about it but she not stopped. In the end i took the case to Family Search administrator, cuz she was running so fast and she wasn't working using the cientific method in files and records for genealogy: you need gather so many documents to probe just one relationship, then another and another, if u aren't sure is better create a personal record with that hypotesis and work on it to test if is true or false, if true u can added that person to your tree.

If I get a record from Ancestry, then I will attach it to my Ancestry tree, but any record that I have that doesn't come from Ancestry I don't try and go through the hoops to attach it there.

As an amateur genealogist who's been working on my family tree for a couple of decades, this was such a satisfying story, with all the evidence falling into place! When I first got into online genealogy, I started pulling in all the family trees i could find, without really checking the source information, and quickly found my tree had all sorts of errors -- names of people that I knew personally that were misspelled in other people's trees, dates that didn't line up, so many problems! I eventually dumped the whole thing and started over, being MUCH pickier about what I add to my tree. I really enjoy watching your videos -- I learn a lot from you!

My extended family cousins have attached the wrong parents to my gggrandfather. I have shown them with documentation why it is the wrong record. But, because it is so each to perpetuate it as fact on both Ancestry and Family Tree, it is now attached to dozens of other persons trees despite the fact that there is no record proving it but several records refuting it.

One of the biggest issues with accuracy of family trees on Ancestry is the failure to prove the relationship between parent and child. It negatively affects ThruLines, and when someone makes an erroneous and unproved guess as to the identity of an ancestor, and everyone copies it, research ends. I don't agree with the statement that "everyone on Ancestry wants accurate family trees," as the level of professional standards is not high on Ancestry. MyHeritage has an error checker built into the subscription, and my genealogy software at home gives a wide range of reports, which include references, so I don't see a need for these expensive add-ons at Ancestry. What Ancestry really needs is a chromosome browser.

  • @Gancanna

It's for the reasons noted that a lot of the information that comes up as hints on Ancestry end up in the Undecided pile with the 'I don't know how to verify this information' notation. I don't use information on other people's trees without verifying their research before adding it to my trees anymore. I made huge messes at the beginning of my journey and am still working to fix some of them! I'm not sure why things like, "A person cannot have been born in 1902 and be on the 1900 census" don't register with some folks. :(

So many people have added kids to my great grandfather Samuel Black. He has an uncommon middle name. I know every place that he’s been to (Indiana and Nebraska). I know that he was married twice, divorced once (my great grandmother was his 2nd marriage. His first wife had been his cousin and none of their 3 children survived past toddlerhood/infancy). I’ve seen people add children born elsewhere and not in Nebraska (where his first 3 children and my grandma and her 3 sisters were born. Also none in Indiana). I’ve made notes on him and have contacted those that kept adding children to him to recheck the sources.

I have two Achilles (Killis) Woodys on my tree... One is my 4x great grandfather, the other is a cousin. Both born in the same year, one stayed in Tennessee, one went to Missouri-he disappeared around 1850 when the other established residence and showed up with a different wife in Tennessee, where they show up on censuses there in 1850. I personally think my Killis died a pauper in Missouri as his wife was an indentured servant for the next decade, but there's no documentation and burial record.

I have the documents showing his wife was an indentured servant. I only have 4 documents proving Achillis' existence. He really didn't want to be found (which seems a theme in that family). One day I'll be able to get down to Missouri and hopefully find some paper trail that hasn't been digitized.

I think there are a lot of people paying to make trees that please them by copying nonsense, and they don't actually want to know the truth. Giving them access to this would annoy them to know that they aren't actually related to Jesus 12 ways from Sunday or a direct descendent of King Arthur. They might not be as willing to pay even the standard price anymore. This at least limits the info to people who are actually interested in knowing the truth and willing to pay for it.

I’ve given up with Ancestry family trees, they give loads of false information and in many cases people just accept the hints without verifying them. In many instances not all records are accurate or reliable and you can be set upon a wrong course especially when going back many centuries. I’ve found that some American families are especially swayed by British titles and are easily influenced into accepting their ancestors are titled. It’s these that you have to sense check especially, because if your ancestors were mainly agricultural people it’s unlikely they suddenly became titled gentry with estates. You have to be so careful about this trap which is why I’ve now given up my family search as Ancestry is so littered with errors and wrong hints it keeps pushing you in wrong directions to make wrong decisions. It’s not easy to get around.

    • @AmyJohnsonCrow
      @AmyJohnsonCrow Місяць тому

You're so right about trees on Ancestry and parts of the FamilySearch tree being horribly wrong. It's frustrating, for sure. The way to get around the bad hints generated by other people's trees is to not pay a whole lot of attention to the hints, and instead focus on specific searches.
